(…) it’s a very different kind of Radiohead record. Liberated from their self-imposed pressure to innovate, they sound– for the first time in ages– user-friendly; the glacial distance that characterized their previous records melted away by dollops of reverb, strings, and melody. From the inclusion and faithful rendering of longtime fan favorite “Nude” to the classic pop string accents on “Faust Arp” to the uncharacteristically relaxed “House of Cards”, Radiohead’s sudden willingness to embrace their capacity for uncomplicated beauty might be In Rainbows’ most distinguishing quality, and one of the primary reasons it’s an improvement on Hail to the Thief.

“Elliott Smith and Kurt Cobain were the great incorruptible rock artists of the nineties. They shared the mentality of outsiders, and refused to give it up even as their fame and talent earned them status as insiders. When Cobain killed himself in 1994, Smith was just emerging as a solo artist, a songwriter who used an acoustic guitar and sweet, aching melodies to convey resentment and self-loathing every bit as acute as Cobain’s. Smith died at the age of 34 in 2003 of a stabbing that may have been self-inflicted—the Los Angeles coroner’s office has never reached a conclusive determination—and thus began his posthumous career.” [New York Magazine Pop Music Review]

”E-ink technology is awesome and it is about to replace the whole printing industry. The quality of this e-book is the same as printed text on white paper. Just imagine one sheet of paper that can load any of the worlds books digitized by Google Books, from Blogs, from online newspapers, from Wikipedia articles and other articles generated from user generated text content, as well as forum posts and more. There just needs to be some automatic selection of daily content as well as more features which this actual first generation e-ink product is missing like resume from ram and flash, pre-processing pages for faster page loading, currently there is about a second delay for pages to load and a slight delay for the WACOM magnetic touch-screen technology.” [via Charbax]

What are the risks and opportunities? What are the proven strategies for successfully capitalizing on these changes?

O’Reilly Radar’s Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices lays out the answers—the why, what, who, and how of Web 2.0. It’s an indispensable guide for technology decision-makers—executives, product strategists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders—who are ready to compete and prosper in today’s Web 2.0 world.”

Go to eBookitStore or read

So what *is* Web 2.0? You’ll find out here…

The term “Web 2.0″ has started to become the hot new label slapped on internet sites to make them “cool”. As such, the words have become somewhat muddled as far as what it actually means. Since O’Reilly came up with the term, perhaps it’s best to go back to that source to discover what Web 2.0 really means. John Musser (with Tim O’Reilly and the O’Reilly Radar team) does just that in the O’Reilly Radar report Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices. I found this really cuts through the hype and confusion…

Contents:
Executive Summary
Section 1 – Market Drivers of Web 2.0: Six Key Market Drivers
Section 2 – Ingredients of Web 2.0 Success: The Eight Core Patterns; Web 2.0 Patterns and Practices Quick Reference
Section 3 – Web 2.0 Exemplars: Web 2.0 Profile – Amazon.com; Web 2.0 Profile – Flickr.com
Section 4 – Web 2.0 Assessment
Appendix A – Web 2.0 Reading List
Appendix B – Technologies of Web 2.0
Endnotes

Because this is a 100 page report and not a book that’s fluffed out to 300 pages, you are getting core information distilled down to the essentials. Musser starts out with a summary that explains how the web has changed in terms of applications and usage, broken down into eight core patterns. Using real examples of companies like MySpace.com, eBay, and many others, he notes how the time of static web pages and PC-only access has gone by the wayside. [an Amazon customer review]

But for those who aren’t hard-core programmers, enhancing pages using Ajax can be a challenge. This book is a step-by-step guide to enhancing Web sites with Ajax.

In this book, he explains how designers can best use standards–primarily XHTML and CSS, plus ECMAScript and the standard Document Object Model (DOM)–to increase their personal productivity and maximize the availability of their creations. Zeldman’s approach is detailed, authoritative, and rich with historical context, as he is quick to explain how features of standards evolved. It’s a fantastic education that any design professional will appreciate. (more)
